YIA promotes youth leadership to its highest level and asks youth to make a difference in the lives of others.


Our Mission, Our Values


YIA maintains and supports quality programs for students in grades 9-12.  We promote positive youth development and public service values, and encourage St. Louis County youth to become young leaders who are better engaged with their communities.  At the same time, we work to bring positive changes to Minnesota through partnerships with area businesses, organizations and elected officials.

Volunteer jobs during Boo at the Zoo at the Lake Superior Zoo include helping out with harvest games, judging the costume contest, line control at the entrance, being costumed greeters, and more! Volunteers are welcome (and encouraged) to dress up, but we ask that it be a FAMILY FRIENDLY costume – please nothing scary or gross.

Volunteer Shifts: 9:15 AM to 1 PM or 12:30 PM to 5 PM

Our Program

                YIA is a St. Louis County Youth Program in conjunction with local government-City's and School Boards, serving 400 youth participants in 15 high schools within 37 communities in Minnesota. Through service learning projects and other activities, high school students gain leadership skills and civic engagement volunteer experience.
